A Harvard University study has called anti-aging dietary supplement Resveratrol “arguably the biggest medical discovery since antibiotics” while the much respected Mayo Clinic declared “Recent research has indicated that Resveratrol, which is found in the skin and seeds of grapes used to make wine, has promising heart-healthbenefits”.
Resveratrol became popular in the 80s when the phrase the “French Paradox” was coined. Scientists were puzzled by the fact that in spite of their high saturated fat intake, the French died less of coronary heart disease and attributed it to their higher consumption of red wine.
Red wine contains Resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant that helps to preserve and restore good health. Resveratrol ispresent in the skin of grapes, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, mulberries, pomegranates and Japanese knotweed, and is synthesized in plants to help protect them against physical harm, infection and disease. Interestingly, it helps to protect humans as well!
Resveratrol has now been launched onto the South African marketplace by LifeTime Supplements – headed up by Cheryl Mulder – in a maximum purity (99%) , pharmaceutical-grade Resveratrol gel formula, giving the equivalent benefits of 170 glasses of red wine in a single dose.
Other reports in academic journals such as Lancet and the National Academy of Sciences document the anti-aging actions of Resveratrol and other benefits including increased energy levels; heart health benefits; effective weight loss and a stronger immune system.
Mulder – a South African IT and telecoms expert who retired to start LifeTime Supplements –explains her Resveratrol journey: “It began when a naturopath prescribed a Resveratrol gel for me. After a month of taking it I saw major improvements in my health, more specifically I experienced increased energy levels, my skin felt smooth and hydrated and I even managed to lose weight. After a couple of months, I stopped taking it as it proved to be very expensive, because it was imported from the US. But then I just didn’t feel as good and so I decided to look into the manufacture of a local, more affordable alternative that was as good as anything on the international market.”
After much research, Mulder found a reputable supplement manufacturer who had the expertise to assist in the formulation and manufacture of LifeTime Resveratrol and developed a product that is 99 percent pure and in a Trans Resveratrol format which is more easily absorbed by the body. Mulder has closely followed the work of the award-winning Dr David Sinclair, a Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, who is regarded as a world expert in ageing. In 2014 he was included in Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Sinclair’s focus is on understanding genes that can help fight disease and ageing including diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. He also studies cellular energy production, learning, memory and neurodegeneration. He has shown how Resveratrol activates the SIRT1 gene, the body's survival mechanism, that extends life in low-energy environments. In the past, SIRT1 has only been activated by extreme caloric restriction (and starvation).
Sinclair has been quoted as saying he wants to “keep people younger for longer not older for longer and make those years productive and healthy” saying about Resveratrol: “(It's) as close to a miraculous molecule as you can find...”
Says Mulder: “While it is almost impossible, to get the recommended dose of Resveratrol from food alone - you would need to drink about 170 glasses of red wine each day to get the equivalent amount - the type of Resveratrol used in our product –Trans Resveratrol – has been proven to be easily absorbed by the body.”
A carton of Lifetime Resveratrol Gel contains 30 x 30ml sachets, one to be taken every day in the morning with food, at a cost of R650 inclusive of VAT and shipping.
“So, around R21.50 a day – which is less than a cup of coffee from your favourite outlet and far more beneficial to your health!” adds Mulder.
“Research into anti-ageing is developing rapidly and there are bound to be huge discoveries in the next few years. However, Resveratrol is the start of this journey to improve the quality of our lives as we age,” Mulder concludes.

The much-anticipated third annual Concours South Africa will be held in Sun City from 10 to 12 August 2018. Hosted by Concours South Africa, it is one of
the handful of such events in the Southern Hemisphere.
Dating back to 17th century France, Concours d'Elegance is a term of French origin that means a "competition of elegance". Concours is not a contest of
speed, but of elegance. Automobiles are judged on the quality of presentation, historical accuracy, technical merit and style – and the best garner reward
The oldest still-existent Concours, the Concours Eleganza Villa d’Este, first held in September 1929, is held annually at Villa d’Este in Cernobbio, on Lake Como
in Italy. The first Concours in North America was held in 1950 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Monterey, California. in conjunction with the first Pebble Beach
Road Race. The honour for longest continually-running Concours event, running since 1956, belongs to the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegence in California.
“The Concours event strives to honour the artistry and craftsmanship of bygone eras”, says Ross Crichton, co-founder of the Concours South Africa.
Limited to 150 vehicles, on display are the finest rare, collectable, classic cars from pre-war vintage to the modern era, all models dating from 1990 and prior.
Judges are drawn from the highest echelons of the automotive and design industries. In 2017 over 80 cars entered various categories and this year, indications
are that entries will swell to some 100 cars.
“We are gratified that there has been so much interest in Concours South Africa, with the actual competition still five months away this bodes well for another
brilliant event in 2018.” says Concours co-founder Paul Kennard.
The event last year was won by the 1989 Ferrari F40 belonging to the Johannesburg collector Keith Rivers, while the victory of the first Concours South Africa,
hosted in 2016, was awarded to the 1985 De Tomaso Pantera GT5 owned by the De Abreu family from Gaborone.
The growth of competitors’ submissions can be attributed to the distinctive formula and combination of glamour, exotic machinery and the high judging
standards comparable to any international level.
Entrants and guests can expect premium hospitality, a gourmet cuisine showcase hosted by top celebrity chefs, a fashion catwalk of the country’s finest
designers and the finest exhibition of classic show cars in the world.
Concours South Africa took it a tier higher this year by hosting a media launch on the 20 March at the Inanda Club, Sandton. The event boasted a display
of collector vehicles, such as the 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, the 1974 Porsche 911L, the 1976 Ferrari 308 GTB, a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona,
1913 Buick Model 24, a 1963 Maserati 3500 GT as well as a 1988 Ferarri F40. Guests at the event also included South Africa’s racing greats, Jaki Scheckter and Arnold
“We look forward to hosting an event in August where enthusiasts can enjoy great cars in a relaxed setting” said Concours South Africa organiser Greg Marucchi.
The weekend programme will include; a Parade De Voitures and a Welcome Function & Auction by Coys of Kensington on Friday 10 August. Saturday 11 August will
welcome a full day of judging competiton cars, with the final prize giving ceremony on Sunday 12 August.
Entries are now open for Concours South Africa 2018. Owners of classic, vintage and veteran cars can enter their vehicles for this year’s event by visiting www.concourssouthafrica.com
Hospitality packages, for those wishing to offer clients an exceptionally unusual weekend, can be arranged through Concours’ co-ordinator, Sabrina Morris, who has a wealth of
experience in managing events at this level. email@example.com

“By fulfilling their dreams, Reach For A Dream brings hope, joy and inspiration by offering a magical moment to regain a childhood lost to illness”– Julia Sotirianakos, CEO, Reach For A Dream
In 30 years, the Reach For A Dream Foundation has brought hope to over 60 000 life-threatened children across South Africa. The Foundation discovered an interesting fact about life-threatening illnesses: a larger percentage of children survive than adults. We believe that one of the reasons for this is, that children simply have not learnt what life-threatening means; they live each day as it is given to them. For children attitude is everything, and they need all the encouragement they can get. Whatever the dream, no matter how big or small, it often gives the child hope and courage to carry on the fight. The fulfilment of these dreams inspires hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for.
“Hope gives us the courage to confront our circumstances and the capacity to surmount them.” – Dr Groopman, author of “The Anatomy of Hope” and Professor at Harvard Medical School.
