Join us for the most challenging, comprehensive and fully interactive Suits & Sneakers seminar yet, as we guide the modern-day employee through the importance of self-development and to remain relevant in an unpredictable workplace by unlocking their entrepreneurial spirit.
Our aim is to equip every employee with the tools needed to unlock their initiative and broaden their potential on their career journey.
Founded by Mark Sham, Suits & Sneakers celebrates it fourth major seminar in three years. Sham is an entrepreneur whose passion is human development. A public speaker by nature, he’s been tackling topics that talk to the soul of South Africa and Suits & Sneakers does exactly that.
A "human development" concept, these events follow the popular TED talks model from the USA and allows speakers to touch on any topic they choose from a thought leadership perspective.
Most people want to help, they just don't always know how. Sham has made it simple for you. You can join and it wont cost a cent. “There is enormous power in numbers and if we do this together, we could create a real change,” he says.
“This is why the people have become obsessed with the concept. It represents a chance to change the world around us. We have speakers doing their best to teach you something new from an informal learning perspective. That means no boring powerpoint presentations or classroom-style teaching.”

It set a world record for the most clothing ever donated and it’s back in Sandton this year, looking to scale new heights and once again make the record books.
The award-winning Empty Shop – which returns for a third year to Sandton City from Saturday, October 29 until Sunday, November 20 – is a novel way to give to charity and make a difference as we head to the festive season.
The concept is simple: donate, style and empty. From the general public to fashion bloggers, stylists and celebrities, everyone is invited to contribute pre-loved clothing, which is then transformed daily on mannequins with show-stopping looks. The only prerequisite is that clothing should be clean and in wearable condition. Every evening the store will be emptied and ready to receive new donations the next day.
Taking place in the Checkers Court, The Empty Shop gives shoppers the opportunity to donate clothing, as well as accessories, children’s books, games and toys, in good condition to a worthy cause.
In previous years, local celebrities such as Rolene Strauss, Jen Su, Maps Maponyane, Azania Mosaka, Anele Mdoda, Lucas Radebe, Thando and Vanya Mangaliso and Jason Greer have all heeded the call to donate.
The Empty Shop in Sandton City, a partnership with McCann Johannesburg, has collected 8,3 tons of clothing to date and in 2014 set a world record (three tons) for the highest amount of clothing donated. Last year, more than five tons of clothing donations were received, setting a new world record.
In addition to setting records, The Empty Shop has also been winning awards. Last month Sandton City won the coveted Spectrum Award for The Empty Shop at the South African Council of Shopping Centres’ (SACSC) Footprint Marketing Awards.
Julie Hillary, General Manager: Sandton region ofJHI Retail, says the response from the public to The Empty Shop over the last two years has been outstanding. “We are delighted to host The Empty Shop once again and invite our shoppers to donate as many clothes, accessories, children’s books, games and toys as possible,” she says.
All proceeds will be donated to HospiceWits, which provides quality palliative care and support to communities in throughout Johannesburg and Soweto. Through HospiceWits patients are assured of the best quality of life, dignity and strength through programmes of home-based palliative care and two in-patient units.
“By partnering with initiatives such as The Empty Shop, HospiceWits is able to generate funds through the sales of donated items in our charity stores. Every item donated ensures that we never have to turn a patient away for financial reasons,” says Joy Ruwodo, Marketing & Fundraising Manager at HospiceWits.
The Empty Shop will be open during Sandton City’s trading hours from October 29: Monday to Saturday 09h00 – 20h00 and Sunday 09h00 – 18h00. The Empty Shop will close at 18h00 on Sunday, November 20.

Bistro Michel, the popular Parisienne-styled restaurant located in the BluBird Shopping Centre (just off Corlett Drive), has launched its new summer menu. Seven new salads – perfect for the warmer weather – have been introduced, as well as a bigger selection of meat cuts in the main menu and prawns. Bistro Michel’s famous hamburgers remain on the list of options.
Says owner and chef Michel Morand: “We want to offer diners food made with the freshest, seasonal ingredients that appeal to all palates.”
Salads include smoked trout with cucumber ribbons on a bed of leaves, drizzled with Tzatziki dressing; duck and rice noodle salad served with cabbage, carrots, coriander and almonds tossed with a lemon, ginger, honey and sesame oil vinaigrette and traditional Cobb salad of crispy bacon, a crumble of blue cheese, tomatoes, diced chicken, boiled egg, lettuce, avocado and a red wine vinaigrette.
For mains try the grilled prawn kebabs served on traditional bisque risotto; pan-fried fresh Norwegian salmon served with basil beurre blanc and thyme potato mash; an aged 300g sirloin steak with green peppercorn sauce and frites or the herb gnocchi served with artichoke, tomato confit sauce and olives.
There’s also more traditional bistro fare such as snails sautéed and served in gratinated potato; Bistro Michel’s terrine accompanied by onion confit and tartare de boeuf coupé au couteau “Classic” served with pommes frites.
Last year the restaurant added a popular gourmet burger option which also remains on the menu. Options include classic beef, chicken Hawaiian, Karoo lamb and vegetarian.
Bistro Michel also offers a good selection of local and international wines.
Michel Morand was born in France and spent his youth in the winelands. From the age of 10 he started cooking thanks to both his grandmothers.
He trained at France’s Thonon Hotel School and upon graduation moved to the UK where he started work at The Great Fosters Hotel in Surrey. He then moved to the US where he worked at Disney World. Morand then returned to France to do his military service. Due to his international experience he was made butler for First General Dupont de Dinechin, Inspector General of the French Military Forces.
Morand moved to South Africa in 1991 and was appointed manager of Johannesburg dining institution Gatrile’s, later becoming a partner until the restaurant closed in 2003. His next venture was the acclaimed Auberge Michel which closed after its lease expired and the premises were demolished for an office block development.
In 2015 Michel opened Bistro Michel in the Blubird Shopping centre.
Bistro Michel will be celebrating owner Michel Morand’s 25th anniversary in South Africa by offering diners all starter dishes for the grand sum of R1 from Monday, October 24 to Sunday, November 5. Only one starter per person is permitted during this promotional period and is valid at this price provided the diner also orders a Bistro Michel main course (includes hamburgers).
