I woke up from the strangest dream this morning.
I was in a magical land called #WitnessTheTour where I saw and heard the most amazing things, you would not even believe it if I told you!
Dancing flamingoes, a shark doing the splits, psychedelic costumes in every colour of the rainbow, sexy girls with all the right moves on a mind-blowing set, but...in the middle of it all there was a human 'Firework'...Katy Perry.
Thank goodness I have all my faculties and I was lucky enough for it to be a true story and not a dream.
One of the biggest pop stars in the world came to SA shores to share the magic of #WitnessTheTour courtesy of Big Concerts and she did not disappoint. Katy Perry is an entertainer through and through and throws herself wholeheartedly into each and every number. I didn't feel that she was 'taking it easy' or catching her breath at any point, as she dashed up and down the vast stage complete with hydraulic lifts giving her all in every routine. She sang all the notes with gusto and her vocal ability really does astonish, especially covering every square inch of the set and connecting with each and every concert-goer.
Katy is backed by a a kickass band who are dressed like characters out of some strange fantasy world in their black and white get ups while the dancers flank her and move with ease, even though they wear big, oversized head gear for many of the songs.
The setlist is brilliantly compiled to satisfy most levels of Katy Perry fan I'd say, with many of her older hits in the middle and others dotted in amongst tracks from her latest album Witness.
The arrangements of the older, 'classic' Katy songs, were brilliantly composed, cleverly tweaked and the crowd went mad for them. The 'Witness' album tracks are pure genius, even when simply listening to them, but add the spectacle of a massive moving stage with larger than life costumes and an energy that is tangible and you will be transported to another place.
I wish I could tell you more about the genius of the costume design, vast screens, choreography and effects, but I don't want to ruin it for you. You have to see it!
Katy Perry, you are in a class of your own and I thank you for leaving your heart and soul on our South African stage. I am so glad I got to #WitnessTheTour
You have one more chance to see this superstar in action in SA. Tickets still available for Saturday night 21 July, 8pm at the Ticketpro Dome.
