A once-off pop-up store for good has opened for a limited run in the gallery space at the newly renovated 44 Stanley Avenue design precinct in Johannesburg.
LiFT for Orange Babies is a beautifully curated pop-up space that features an eclectic array of work donated by artists and designers as part of a fundraising initiative for Orange Babies, an organisation that believes that no babies should be born with HIV.
Among those who have so generously contributed to LiFT for Orange Babies are designers Kirsten Goss, Missibaba, Pichulik, Tshepo the JeanMaker, Lunar, Black Coffee and Gert-Johan Coetzee as well as fine artists Robyn Penn, Hannah Paton, Sam Nhlengethwa, Abe Opperman, Guy du Toit, Mark Lewis, Danny Myburgh, Anthony Shapiro, Yuill Damaso and Haidee Nel and furniture designers Joe Paine, La Grange and Leonardo + Metaphor. Their contributions join those of over 50 others to create a retail experience that is as much a showcase of South African creativity as it is an important fundraiser.
Since originally conceived in the late 90s by Baba Sylla, a Netherlands-based Senegalese activist, Orange Babies has initiated multiple projects in South Africa, Zambia and Namibia. “LiFT for Orange Babies is a true opportunity to exercise, with pleasure, one’s solidarity,” she says.
“LiFT for Orange Babies is about building HOPE for the future while celebrating the beauty around us through art and fashion,” adds Audrey Mothupi, Orange Babies South Africa chairperson. “Everyone who joins the movement, lays the foundation towards an HIV /Aids free generation while LIFT'ing our babies into a new world. I would encourage everyone to make time to stop by and shop, and invest in a bright future.”
LiFT for Orange Babies is the result of a collaboration between several of South Africa’s leading creatives across different spheres – A Better World Network, Metaphor Design, Breinstorm Brand Architects, The Rare Library, 44 Stanley, Room Service Co., and Adrienne Feldner, who originally helped launch Orange Babies in South Africa.
“LiFT for Orange Babies is a tangible manifestation of our joint belief that sitting idly by is not an option,” says Sam Manclark, Director of A Better World Network.
“The unique pop-up shop offers a selection of diverse products that don’t often come together in a single retail experience. It’s the perfect place to support South African design and Orange Babies and we look forward to welcoming everyone into the space.”
100% of the proceeds from the sale of each and every single item will go towards Orange Babies. The pop-up shop will run from the 21 September to 20 November 2016 and new additions to the stock will be added over that period.
