Wanting a family dinner but wondering how you’re going to navigate the terrain (safely) with your baby in tow?
Not to worry. BabyYumYum, SA’s leading online resource platform and parenting community for all baby-related information has teamed up with Zomato, South Africa's premiere restaurant discovery platform and food review hub, to bring families a collection of baby friendly restaurants in South Africa.
And just in case you’re still not 100% convinced that you can brave a restaurant dinner with your baby, here is our 6-step solution mapped out for you:
It’s time to have the odds stacked in your favour. Choose a baby-friendly restaurant. To get the best up to date information on baby-friendly restaurants, visit CAPE TOWN BABYYUMYUM DURBAN BABYYUMYUM JOBURG BABYYUMYUM
The link will direct to the best reviewed restaurants which have specific baby-friendly criteria such as easy pram access to the restaurant; ease of manoeuvring between tables; clean high chairs; a private breastfeeding area; clean baby changing facilities; a suitable, safe place for babies/toddlers to play with minders; ability to assist with extras such as warming up baby food or a bottle; sterilized plastic bowls, cups and spoons for baby’s meal and even offering baby food on the menu!
Think in advance about the possible landmines which need to be sidestepped (like a full nappy, hungry baby). Once you have this ‘obstacle list’ you can then plan how to handle possible challenging moments (for example, have a change of nappy and clothes with you).
If the restaurant has baby food, then everyone can ‘eat out,’ including baby. Be careful to take waiting time into account so that you avoid the tear-filled situation of a hungry baby. If on the other hand you want to feed baby either before or at the restaurant, you’ll need to factor that in too.
Bring your baby’s favourite toys, which keeps your little one occupied. This is a great way of engaging your baby. A bonus is that these familiar objects provide additional security, making your baby feel happy and more relaxed, which means you get to enjoy more of your meal.
Make sure that you have with you extra wet wipes on hand, a disposable bib and a spare nappy disposal bag to wipe up and toss away all left over meal items ( the empty yoghurt carton or the Kiri Cheese wrapper) and spills. Let’s be honest, no waiter wants to wipe up sloppy baby food. Be a clean, considerate mommy.
Most importantly, use this time to connect with your loved ones. It can even be regarded as the starting point of a great tradition of enjoying family activities together.
Don’t aim for perfection – that’s for amateurs. Embrace the fact that it could get messy, but this is just a means to a more palatable end of making time to be together as a family. Just remember when it comes to going out with your baby, practice makes …happy.
