Coffee, from its creation to its consumption, is a craft. The ritualist process of crafting the perfect blend - the care, the commitment, the community around it - is reflected in the experiential value of making and enjoying that perfect cup of coffee. This ritualistic routine is entrenched in our culture - whether enjoying a cup after a long day or pairing it with your favourite cuisine, the moments that coffee makes better are boundless.
The taste sensations of coffee brought to our cups are mastered by craftsmen, and encapsulated by Nespresso’s new Master Origin collection. This finely crafted range coffees include five distinct coffee sensations all inspired by the land from which they originate.
Each of the Master Origin coffees has been on a unique journey of discovery. The Nespresso coffee experts scoured the world to discover the finest coffee sourcing regions, from the forested mountains of Sumatra through to the highland vales of Nicaragua. Within each selected region, Nespresso formed a partnership with the local farming experts and embarked on a mission to test innovative and demanding farming practices, all with the goal of crafting incredible new coffee aromas and tastes.
In Ethiopia, the coffee beans had a meticulous raking every hour by hand to ensure even drying throughout the batches. In Colombia, the typical harvest time was pushed to the limit – each coffee cherry was left on the tree, risking fermentation, until it was exactly the right shade of deep purple to be picked. Over in Sumatra, Indonesia, farmers used a traditional and uniquely local wet-hulling method, whilst in Nicaragua, a sweet approach was taken, using the ‘black honey’ method which involves leaving the coffee bean in its natural fruit layer whilst it is drying to allow it to soak up the natural sugars. The coffee sourced in India experienced an age-old ‘monsoon’ technique that was once a natural occurrence when coffee, historically transported via boat, took on a high level of moisture from the ocean, making the beans swell and reveal a unique new flavour. This process was applied to Master Origin India, where Robusta beans were ‘monsooned’.
Karsten Ranitzsch, the Head of Coffee at Nespresso, explains: “Processing techniques play a hugely important role in the final coffee profile and with the new Master Origin coffees we wanted to expand on this idea further and see how we could use a mix of traditional, new and adapted methods to produce five distinct and original coffees. Together with the local farmers, we took risks and challenged ourselves to achieve these tastes, and this was only made possible thanks to the mutual trust and supportive relationships with the local coffee farmers, established through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable QualityTM Program.
Through this program, we worked closely with knowledgeable and passionate farmers at each origin’s location to master the craft of these origin coffees.”

The 2018 Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player will bring some of the biggest names in world golf to Sun City this November, including four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy and 2017 Masters champion Sergio Garcia.
From November 8-11, the Gary Player Country Club at Sun City will witness the strongest field since the tournament became part of the prestigious Rolex Series on the European Tour in 2017.
Branden Grace will lead the South African challenge as the world number 38 returns to defend the title he won in style last year, and which ended a 10-year wait between South African victories in ‘Africa’s Major’.
Brandon Stone, who represented South Africa in golf’s historic return to the Olympic Games in 2016 and a three-time European Tour winner, will also be in the field.
It’s a field that already delights tournament host Gary Player.

The Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player is one of world golf’s most renowned tournaments. When it made its debut in 1981 it offered the richest prize money in the history of golf of $1 million.
Throughout its history it has seen Major winners, world number ones and the legends of golf compete for the famed crystal trophy, from Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros to Ernie Els, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.
The tournament is one of only eight tournaments on the entire European Tour to enjoy the premium status of a Rolex Series event, and this year offers a total prize fund of $7.5 million.
The tournament also comes at a key time on the European Tour as the penultimate event before the season-ending DP World Tour Championship on the Race to Dubai.

Miss South Africa 2018, Tamaryn Green, today announced she will be focusing on tuberculosis as her official year of reign campaign. Green herself also spoke publicly for the first time about her own battle with TB in 2015.
Every Miss South Africa titleholder has an opportunity during her year of reign to adopt a cause or launch a campaign which it is hoped, because of her high profile, makes a difference in the lives of many.
Through her #breakthestigma campaign, TB survivor Green, will be lending her support to raise awareness of global and national TB campaigns, with the hope that people suffering from tuberculosis will come out of the shadows and are not stigmatised.
Green – who was a sixth-year medical student at UCT when she took the Miss South Africa crown earlier this year – was diagnosed with occupationally acquired TB three years ago but failed to share her story because of the stigma associated with it. This made the process of diagnosis and treatment much harder and more traumatic for her.
She will run her campaign in conjunction with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Department of Health. WHO’s End TB campaign is aiming to conquer the global TB epidemic, with targets to reduce TB deaths by 95% and to cut new cases by 90% between 2015 and 2035, and to ensure that no family is burdened with catastrophic expenses due to TB. It has set interim milestones for 2020, 2025 and 2030.

Present at Green’s TB campaign launch were Dr Nketeko Mkhondo from WHO and Phumlani Ximiya from the Department of Health who took part in a panel discussion with Green.
Says Green: “It took me three years to talk about my story. I could have avoided a lot of trauma speaking about it sooner. I am now in the process of dealing with it. I want to encourage people not to be afraid to speak up about their problems and get the help they need. It is the only way we are going to beat TB.”
“The power of the Miss SA platform is bigger than I could ever have imagined and I am in a position where my voice can be heard and with that I have an opportunity to help as many people as I can,” she says.
Green answers questions regarding her TB initiative:
Why did you choose to focus on TB?
My campaign aims at breaking the stigma around tuberculosis and raising awareness around this global issue. It serves as another working step towards a TB-free world. I chose this cause because I am a survivor of TB. In 2015 I was diagnosed with TB and failed to share my story because of the stigma associated with it. This made the process of diagnosis and treatment much harder and more traumatic. TB is one of the top 10 killers worldwide and if telling my story can help reduce that prevalence I will be very happy.
You were a final year medical student when you were crowned Miss SA – what will this bring to your TB outreach?
Being a sixth-year medical student allowed me to witness the TB problem first hand. It has helped me identify the need for this outreach and through my studies I have a better understanding of the disease, allowing me to stand stronger in support of this project. The experience with patient doctor interaction also helps me relate and empathise with those who have been affected by this disease.
Tell us about your personal journey with TB
I was officially diagnosed by an infectious specialist in June 2015, after a number of tests and I started treatment immediately. I made the decision not to tell any of my extended family and friends for fear of being treated differently and being isolated as this often happens with TB patients. In my second month of treatment I could no longer handle the discomfort of sitting through lectures. I then spoke to my lecturer who immediately got me help from a specialist doctor at Groote Schuur. The university was very supportive throughout the process and offered counselling. My treatment continued until I developed a hepatitis secondary to the medication. This was when it got really bad. I felt ill every day for a month and I deferred my exams and moved back home. My medication was then changed and soon I started feeling better until eventually I was cured. The whole story was more traumatic than I ever allowed myself to admit. It not only affected me but also my immediate family and close friends.
What did you learn?
I grew and learned so much about myself through the process. I always saw myself as a strong and independent woman. While being ill I was vulnerable and needed help. I learned that you don't have to deal with everything by yourself. I was disappointed in myself for falling ill, placing more strain on my family and deferring an exam as a third-year medical student. Speaking about this now is hopefully not only helping other people speak up but is also helping me process and deal with what happened.
What are some of the things you want people to know and understand about TB?
Ø TB does not discriminate! Anyone can get it. Stigma and discrimination prevent effective diagnosis and treatment.
Ø TB is a curable disease yet so many people still die at the hands of this disease every day.
Ø TB is a chronic infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis. It usually affects the lungs, but can attack other parts of the body, such as the joints, bones, the nervous system and lymph nodes.
Ø TB is a global problem, although undeveloped countries usually have much higher incidences than developed countries. South Africa has one of the highest reported TB infection rates in the world.
Ø TB is mainly spread by breathing in airborne bacteria from people with active infectious TB.
Ø A person can be infected by the TB organism for years without getting sick or spreading the disease. If the immune system is weakened for some reason, latent TB infection can develop into active disease. This can happen to anyone.
Ø Although TB can be treated, the minimum period required for successful treatment is six months and medication must be taken exactly as prescribed. Failure to complete the treatment regimen may result in the emergence of drug resistant strains of TB. This has already happened in South Africa.
In 2014, the World Health Assembly adopted WHO’s End TB Strategy to eliminate the global TB epidemic by 2035, by reducing 90% of TB cases. Do you think this is going to happen?
I believe it is very possible but will require a lot of implementation and strategising.
How is it possible that the world’s deadliest infectious disease is actually curable, but still killed nearly 1.7 million people last year? Year on year, we learn that there are more cases of drug-resistant (DR) forms of tuberculosis (TB), yet the diagnostic gap remains massive: Four in five people with DR-TB remain undiagnosed, and only half of those started on treatment are cured. Comments?
There are a number of reasons for this. TB is not spoken about enough. We need more attention drawn to the issue. Treatment is given but not enough counselling around the disease and importance of adherence is done. Access to health facilities are not always possible for many people. This prevents diagnosis, follow-up is often lost and people never get their diagnosis and treatment. The stigma around TB makes disclosure to families and friends very difficult and often discourages patients attending clinics. There is a lot of shaming and blaming of patients around this disease.

As head of artist development he signed and developed some of the giants of the SA music business including Evoid, Mango Groove, MarcAlex, Lesley Rae Dowling, The Asylum Kids, Little Sister and countless others. As owner of leading independent label Fresh Music he was responsible for the success of Nianell and Blk Sonshine as well as the Retro Reissue Series and later as A&R consultant for Universal Music he was the force behind the commercial success of Elvis Blue and The Arrows.
A walking encyclopaedia of contemporary music, Benjy started his career in music working in record stores in Hillbrow during the heady Seventies when vinyl ruled supreme. Although he is no Luddite and embraces music on all formats, his preferred listening has always been on vinyl . “There`s something about playing vinyl records that fascinates me. It`s a complete visceral and tangible experience-from taking the record out of the sleeve, placing it on the turntable, cleaning it and then dropping the needle on the disc and waiting for the magic to burst forth from the speakers….the occasional `crackle` or `pop `There is also the thrill of reading the sleeve liner notes or singing along with the lyrics-it`s not the same with CD and completely non-existent with downloads”.
At one time Benjy had accumulated over 16,000 LPs which he carted around with him on his various house moves. Even when CD became the dominant format he continued to play his beloved records until the thought of boxing them up for yet another move filled him with dread. “I decided to whittle them down to the 100 records that had been the soundtrack to my life and informed my musical choice, and sell the rest”. Which he did. However some months later fate intervened in the form of 3 crates of mint `70s psych, blues and progressive rock records dumped on his doorstep, and his life- long love affair with these round black plastic discs filled with magic continued.
After exiting Universal Music in 2013 Benjy decided to return to his roots and founded his store Vinyl Junkie in Blairgowrie. “I wanted a place where real music lovers could come to, not only to buy records, but to talk about music, browse through the many music magazines and books on the shelves and discover new and exciting music for the first time. That`s my favourite pastime” And his many customers will attest to that! Although he is there most days (when he`s not out scouting for new records) the official opening times are Wednesdays and Fridays from 2pm to 6pm and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. However take a chance and pop in on any other day, if he`s there he`ll open for you.
