Parktown North in Johannesburg, specifically 7th Avenue, has become a hub of interesting, trendy and incredibly diverse and delicious eateries. One can pretty much experience cuisine from all over the world on that one road and we have found a gem!
Workshop 55 is the perfect place to go whether it be for a meal with a loved one or group of friends, a night out with the girls, party celebration or even a business lunch or dinner. The food selection is out of this world and the tapas, which is locally inspired, will have you wanting to return over and over again to sample all they have to offer. Things work a little differently at Workshop 55, with a cover charge of R210 per person being charged which gives you three tapas, which is more than enough, we felt. If you have a big hunger, additional dishes can be ordered for R50 each.
Before we get into the delicious variety of tapas dishes, we must start with the drinks one can delight in at Workshop 55.
They pride themselves in their selection of gins and tonics, some local and some imported...all infused with a variety of herb and fruit flavours that will make your tastebuds dance a jive.
I started with a local gin coupled with an imported tonic water and flavoured with blackberries and orange, whilst my husband sipped on one with a hint of grapes and grapefruit and we even had to order a third with thyme and cucumber, yummy!
The efficient and super friendly Nimrod also brought us some tempura veggies to nibble on while we decided what tapas to choose.
Workshop 55 has such diversity in the choice of tapas that there is definitely something for everyone's taste and palate. After much thought, we decided on -
* Garlic snails - Seared with garlic and glazed with red wine, parmesan pearl barley risotto, gremolata dressing
* Bacalhau - Salted codfish, potato dumpling with a salsa of olive, red onion, orange
* Lamb shoulder croquette - Red wine braised, pickled carrots, mango atchar, soured cream
* Smoked duck breast - Butternut purée, apple & sage, spiced candied pecan nut
* Exotic mushroom arancini - Risotto croquette, truffle mayonnaise, sautéed mushrooms
* Chicken livers - Pancetta, sour cherries with a mustard cream sauce
Each and every dish was carefully prepared and the variety of flavour on offer, something to celebrate! The decor of the restaurant makes you feel as though you could be anywhere in the world and the service is top notch.
Workshop 55 offers a dining experience like no other and is definitely a place we will be returning to in the very near future.
